Here's a sneak peek of Madeline's first diary entry!
April 23rd 1847
Dear Diary,
An incident of the most unusual occurrence happened to me last night, something which my young brain cannot fathom in the slightest.
I fear I may be going stark raving mad!
I cannot eat, I cannot sleep. I am constantly jumping at the tiniest of sounds; my heart feels as if it is being pulled out of my chest it is beating so fast! Today I could not help but constantly look over my shoulder whilst I walked through the village, as if he might be there, following and watching my every move. I do not feel safe any more.
I know deep down in my heart that this is only the beginning and that a terrible chain of events has been set in motion. Or maybe that is just me being a pessimist – or the three bottles of wine I had intoxicated myself with last night- Don’t tell the Master!
You are the only one I can turn to, for if I fear if I tell the Master, or even my own Mother, they would lock me up in the asylum and never let me out.
Why is this happening to me, Diary? Why now?
Finally I feel as if everything is going right with my life. I no longer feel as if I am drifting through life on an endless road leading to nowhere. I feel as if I am finally finding my place in this cold and cruel world within which I am living. I am making a means for myself.
I have stable job keeping the Master's house; yes the money isn't all that good, and the Master and his male acquaintances do have a tendency to wander with their hands, but it ensures that I can look after myself and my Mother so that is all that matters to me.
But why did that accursed man have to come crashing into my life and ruin everything!
I don’t deserve this, Diary! I am a good person.
Perhaps it would be better if I told you everything that happened from the very beginning. Perhaps it will make more sense to myself if I explained everything about last night, the Master’s house party – which was a complete and utter disaster, for me at least. Yes, I'll explain everything about the strange man, with his strange blue box.
The man who calls himself the Doctor.
